If the storm opened your roof up, tarping it properly buys you the time to make good decisions instead of rushed ones. A tarp that is run over the ridge and fastened into sound decking will hold through the next system. One that is weighted down with a few bricks will not.

Hail bruising on an asphalt shingle is a soft, dark, roughly circular spot where the granules have been knocked off and the mat underneath has been fractured. It does not leak the week it happens. It leaks in two or three years when UV has finished off the exposed mat.

That delay is why hail damage gets missed. Homeowners look up from the driveway, see no missing shingles, and assume the roof is fine. The tells from the ground are dents in soft metal: gutters, downspouts, roof vents, the top of an air conditioner condenser, a mailbox. If those are dimpled, the roof took the same hits.

Straight-line winds do two things to a shingle roof. They tear tabs off outright, which is obvious, and they break the seal strip without moving the shingle, which is not. An unsealed shingle sits there looking normal and lets water under it in every subsequent rain.

Creased shingles give it away. Look for a horizontal line across the tab where it folded back and dropped again. We check for those on every slope, not just the one that faced the storm.

Every inspection comes back with dated photographs: the slope, the test squares, the soft-metal damage, the areas of granule loss. Whether or not you end up filing a claim, that record is worth having. If you do file, it is the difference between a straightforward approval and a fight.
